Manages the 24-hour operation of designated unit(s) in an efficient and cost effective manner. Assures the provision of quality patient care through compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies, and efficient management of clinical and financial resources. Applies management and clinical expertise, education, research, and consultation to optimize operational outcomes. Represents designated units in forums, fostering a collaborative approach and focusing on effective, effective service to patients and community. Assumes accountability for implementation of Baldrige quality process initiatives.
The Nurse Manager reports to the Administrative Director of Perioperative Services and meets on an individual basis with her/him once per month. In addition, the Nurse Manager meets with the staff once per month and all Perioperative Leadership staff on a monthly basis, and all hospital management staff monthly. This nurse manager has about 60 FTE direct reports, comprised of RNs, LVNs, and Secretaries.
The Nurse Manager works closely with the Chair of the Department of Surgery and Chief of Anesthesia Services. Additional medical staff interface is common with the Chiefs of clinical services. She/he participates in the following Medical Staff Committees: Department of Surgery, OR Committee, Department of Anesthesia, Department of Orthopedics and others upon invitation.
Bachelor degree in Nursing or other health care field preferred or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Master’s degree preferred. Five years of relevant clinical nursing experience. Minimum of 3 years experience in a progressively responsible management/leadership position, preferably in a comparable size acute care facility. Long-term years of experience preferred for Skilled Nursing Facility position. General business and budget experience strongly preferred. Current unencumbered California RN license. BLS and ACLS required. Certification in a nursing specialty preferred. Membership in professional organizations and certification preferred.
Strong working knowledge of Title 22, JCAHO, federal and state regulations, and related accreditation standards. Demonstrates proactive attitude and creativity in problem solving. Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to lead and motivate staff. Demonstrates dedication to quality service. Strong verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to concerns and sensitive inquiries or complaints form customers, regulatory agencies or members the business community. Ability to effectively present information and articulate issues and problems to top management and/or boards of directors.
